چکیده

Delay/Doppler radar altimetry has been receiving an increasing interest, especially since the launch of the first altimeter in 2010. It aims at reducing the measurement noise and increasing the along-track resolution in comparison with conventional pulse limited altimetry. A semi-analytical model was recently introduced for this new generation of delay/Doppler altimeters. The first contribution of this paper is the derivation of the Cramér-Rao bounds (CRBs) associated with the parameters of this recent delay/Doppler model. These bounds are then compared with those obtained for conventional altimetry. The second contribution of this paper is the derivation of a new weighted least squares estimator based on the semianalytical delay/Doppler model. The performance of this estimator is very promising when compared to other more classical estimators and to the corresponding CRBs.

Cramér-Rao Bounds for Estimation of Linear System Noise Covariances

The performance of Kalman filter depends directly on the noise covariances, which are usually not known and need to be estimated. Several estimation algorithms have been published in past decades, but the measure of estimation quality is missing. The Cramér-Rao bounds represent limitation of quality of parameter estimation that can be obtained from given data. In this article, The Cramér-Rao bo...

Bounds on Time Delay and Doppler Estimation with Partially Coherent Signals

Fundamental performance limits for passive time delay and Doppler estimation have been studied extensively for several decades. The fundamental limits are usually parameterized in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at each sensor, the spectral support of the signals (fractional bandwidth), and the time-bandwidth product of the observations. In some applications, loss of coherence between ...

Cramér-Rao bound for range estimation

In this paper, we derive the Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) for range estimation, which does not only exploit the range information in the time delay, but also in the amplitude of the received signal. This new bound is lower than the conventional CRB that only makes use of the range information in the time delay. We investigate the new bound in an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with atten...

Technical report associated with the paper “A Semi-Analytical Model for Delay/Doppler Altimetry and its Estimation Algorithm”

TECHNICAL REPORT – 2013, April Abstract The concept of delay/Doppler altimetry has been under study since the mid 90’s, aiming at reducing the measurement noise and increasing the along-track resolution in comparison with the conventional pulse limited altimetry. This paper introduces a new model for the mean backscattered power waveform acquired by a radar altimeter operating in SAR mode, as w...

Analytical Performance Bounds for Full and Reduced-order Distributed Bayesian Estimation

Motivated by the resource management problem in nonlinear multi-sensor tracking networks, the paper derives online, distributed estimation algorithms for computing the posterior Cramér-Rao lower bound (PCRLB) for full-order and reduced-order distributed Bayesian estimators without requiring a fusion centre and with nodal communications limited to local neighborhoods. For both cases, Riccati-typ...
